But, times have changed, and now successful women lead in all sectors. Many of them have overcome extreme adversity to attain their dreams. Sri Lankan born Social Sciences Professor,
J. Merelle Rodrigo
, came to Canada at the age of eight. During this time the social climate in Canada was not one of acceptance for people of colour and she and her four-year-old brother felt the sting of racism as stones were hurled at them and snide teachers predicted that theirs would be careers of servitude and menial labour. Using this prophecy as a motivator to succeed, Merelle educated herself at the University of Toronto in the fields of Criminology, Psychology and Sociology, and began a rewarding and enriching career in teaching and professional speaking.

Merelle’s presentations are poignant, humorous and capture the indomitable spirit of human nature. Merelle has knowledge of a diverse number of subjects, and she captures the hearts and minds of her audiences to entertain, educate and inspire them to reach their greatest potential.
