Actor, comedian and activist Derek Forgie is a remarkable plate-spinner. (metaphorically, of course) When he’s not entertaining the daily in-studio audiences at MTV Canada he somehow manages to balance a hardy diet of stand-up comedy, activism and popping up in the occasional television commercial. If you were to add up every time he’s been a: keynote speaker, warm-up act, DJ, comic, emcee, host, and actor, in front of a crowd, it adds up to a staggering 1800+ different audiences before the age of 30. Derek has devoted much his adult life to the pursuit of equality for all.
As the Founder and Chair of the HSSE (The Heterosexuals for Same-Sex Equality) He has also brought his passion for equality to such notable events as: “What Makes a Man” conference (Hosted by The White Ribbon Campaign) and “An Evening of Hope” (Hosted by The Durham Distress Centre). Derek has also put his many comedian friends to work by producing/hosting fundraisers for the likes of: The Ontario Breast Cancer Foundation, Camp Ten Oaks and The Stephen Lewis Foundation (to name a few).
As a notable piece of trivia, Derek isn’t just an ally to people being marginalized because of gender, race, or sexual orientation, he also took a stand for his redheaded comrades. Derek is also the proud founder of “Kiss a Ginger Day.” The annual viral event that counters the notorious “Kick a Ginger Day.”
Derek’s tireless and effective work awarded him and the HSSE a 2012 “Inspire Award” for Community Organization of the year. His passion for shining light on environmental issues is also a life-long one. His years with The Polaris Institute have made him the face of their “Inside the Bottle” presentations that lambaste the bottled water industry.
He regularly works with eco-activist/author Emily Hunter engaging people with their “Instant Activists” presentation. You can also find him hard at work at MTV Canada co-producing television segments that reach a national audience. Undeniably, Derek is an important and effective Eco-Ally.
