As a young girl Lauren was cripplingly shy and timid, and as a result became a target for bullying. Her small stature and ethnicity were not accepted by her peers. From the outside her life appeared ordinary, but inside she felt anything but. Despite all of her perceived shortcomings and the various emotional hurdles she experienced growing up, Lauren stayed true to herself and always did what she knew was right for her. By following the inner voice deep inside her, Lauren achieved great things by focusing on the things she loves. Beyond Bullying: Breaking the Stigma Through Conversation
Lauren never forgets her adolescent experience; feelings isolated, alone, and tormented having been bullied through most of grade school. Lauren has spurred conversation on mental health awareness by lending her voice to the Bell Let’s Talk initiative. She can shed light on overcoming the suffering of bullying and how to deal with it in the present. She was a spokesperson for The Walk So Kids Can Talk, the largest annual fundraiser for Kids Help Phone. She hosted the half hour special Much Talks: Degrassi, a companion piece to an episode dealing with suicide. The special was designed to open up the conversation around depression, suicide and common mental illness. Lauren draws upon these experiences to facilitate discussion and openness around mental health issues.
Social Smarts: Engaging Online Audiences
Through trial and error and converging her television presence with complimentary online conversation Lauren figured out the secrets to being socially smart. Whether it’s One Direction and Bieber fans hating on her or passionate Degrassi fans wanting to know the inside scoop, Lauren believes strong online brands are built through honest and thoughtful engagement. With over 25,000 followers on Instagram and 90,000 followers on Twitter, the twitter and insta obsessed could learn a thing a or two about what gets the RT or double tap and what just slides on by into the ether.
Living Mindfully: New Ways to View the World Lauren Toyota is an animal lover and a vegan. GASP! A vegan. Living consciously in all aspects is not an easy thing to do nor is it an overnight transformation, but Lauren can speak poignantly about how to take the first steps and deal with the social struggles of coming out of the vegan closet. She has constantly been evolving her commitment to this lifestyle and now understands her role as a global citizen. Lauren is trying to encourage the world to make better choices with her lifestyle blog hot for food. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or none of the above, Lauren merely wants to open your eyes to a new way of looking at the world and how we’re all connected.
